The story of M3, the bald eagle, is a testament to the power of conservation efforts and the impact of a single individual's work. In 1976, a 26-year-old biologist, Tina Morris, embarked on a groundbreaking experiment to raise young bald eagles in a controlled setting at New York's Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Her goal was to use a technique known as 'hacking', where young birds are raised in a controlled environment before being released to live independently. This method had been used with other raptors, but applying it to bald eagles was still an experiment. Morris spent months living alone beside an artificial nest, providing food and care without allowing the birds to become dependent on human contact. She climbed the tower daily, using a long stick to deliver food and avoid imprinting, which would make the young birds associate humans with food. The first two eaglets, W1 and W2, arrived in June 1976, followed by M3, who had a broken leg and was already handled by humans. Morris developed a particular attachment to M3, and her dedication paid off. The first group eventually left the area as independent birds, and Morris returned in 1977 to help raise another four eaglets. By then, the basic approach had proved workable, and other researchers became involved. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation later took over the program. M3's story continued even after Morris's time at Montezuma ended. He was identified by his band number, 03142, and lived for about 35 years, fathering an estimated 70 offspring. This figure should be treated as an estimate rather than a precise count. M3's impact was significant, as he helped establish a practical method for releasing young bald eagles into areas where the species had disappeared. The bald eagle's situation in the United States was dire when Morris began her work. In 1963, only 417 known nesting pairs remained in the lower 48 states, primarily due to DDT accumulation in the food chain, which interfered with the birds' ability to produce strong eggshells. Habitat loss, shooting, and other pressures had also reduced populations. However, the species made a remarkable recovery. In 2007, the Fish and Wildlife Service removed the bald eagle from the federal endangered and threatened species list, estimating 9,789 breeding pairs. A later federal estimate based on 2018-2019 data put the population at about 316,700 individual bald eagles, including 71,467 breeding pairs. Laws protecting eagles, the U.S. ban on DDT, habitat protection, and other conservation programs played crucial roles in this recovery. Morris's work at Montezuma was a vital part of this success, as it helped establish a practical method for releasing young bald eagles into areas where the species had disappeared. Nearly five decades later, the experiment is preserved not only in conservation records but also in the story of M3, one of the eaglets Morris once watched from a hidden position beside a 35-foot nest. This story highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the impact of a single individual's work. It also serves as a reminder that even small actions can have a significant and lasting impact on the world.
