As the new school year approaches, Summit High School's boys golf team is gearing up for a challenging and competitive season. With tryouts completed and the first tournament on the horizon, head coach Zach Dobrota is optimistic about the team's prospects.
"The older boys bring a wealth of experience, and I believe they will excel in the tournament arena," Dobrota shared. "We have a strong senior contingent, including Parker Gray, Hunter Plummer, and Sawyer Coffman, all with their sights set on state qualification and potential collegiate golf careers."
The team's depth is impressive, with a mix of talented players from all grade levels. Dobrota highlighted the potential of Jack Tobias, Jagger and Jaxx Roberts, and Fisher Woodard, who could all make an impact if they peak at the right moments.
However, the competition within the team is fierce, and earning a spot in the tournament roster is not guaranteed. "Every golfer must bring their A-game to secure their place in the lineup," Dobrota emphasized. "The team's strength lies in its diversity, and the season promises to be an exciting battle for playing time."
One of the key challenges for Summit High lies in the geographical advantage of their Front Range opponents. "The eastern half of the state offers more golfing facilities and longer seasons," Dobrota explained. "This gives Front Range schools an edge, as their golfers have year-round access to courses and can develop their skills consistently."
The Tigers will face some of their toughest tests against these Front Range rivals. Dobrota singled out the Eisenhower Blue course at the Air Force Academy as a particularly daunting challenge, praising its tough greens and the opportunity to test the team's short game and putting skills.
Other notable tournaments include the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, a regular host of U.S. Open qualifiers, and a home tournament in Keystone, which the Tigers won last year. "We've stacked the field for our home event on September 10th, making it even more challenging than before," Dobrota said.
Despite the high expectations and intense competition, Dobrota emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. "Golf is as much a mental game as it is physical. I want to see our golfers manage their emotions and expectations, celebrating their successes and learning from their mistakes," he explained.
Ultimately, Dobrota's goal is for the team to enjoy the sport and have fun. "They are students first, and golfers second. We want them to embrace the competitive spirit while also enjoying the experience and not being too hard on themselves," he concluded.
As the season unfolds, the Summit High boys golf team promises to deliver thrilling performances, showcasing their talent and determination on the green.
