The upcoming PS5 RPG, The Blood of Dawnwalker, is generating buzz for its emphasis on player choice and consequence. Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz and lead quest designer Rafał Jankowski discuss the game's unique approach to RPG design, prioritizing player agency over traditional main quests and optional side quests.
In The Blood of Dawnwalker, players embark on a single, overarching objective: rescuing their family from a vampire lord who occupies a castle. However, the journey is far from linear. The game encourages exploration and engagement with various "optional" quests, allowing players to gather allies, enhance their abilities, and gather crucial knowledge about their enemies.
Jankowski highlights the game's structure, stating, "To finish The Blood of Dawnwalker, all you need to do is storm the antagonist’s castle, face them in combat, and rescue the family. There are no additional requirements or prerequisites that you need to tick off, which means that all the stories that we prepared for the players are somewhat optional."
This design choice is a departure from the conventional RPG formula, where main quests are surrounded by optional side quests. Instead, Dawnwalker offers a more open-ended experience, allowing players to forge their own path. The game's time system, where hours and days progress based on player actions, further enhances the sense of agency and encourages multiple playthroughs, ensuring that no two playthroughs are ever identical.
Tomaszkiewicz elaborates on this concept, stating, "They are creating one whole experience for the player, but we are closer to a pen-and-paper RPG where the Game Master is deciding how he wants to lead you and deciding what he wants to do. In our game, you create this choice to achieve your goal by yourself."
The game's focus on player choice and consequence is a refreshing take on the RPG genre, offering a more dynamic and engaging experience. As the development team continues to refine The Blood of Dawnwalker, players can anticipate a rich and immersive world where their decisions have a tangible impact on the outcome. With its innovative approach to RPG design, The Blood of Dawnwalker is poised to become a standout title in the PS5 library, captivating players with its emphasis on player agency and storytelling.
